CHP-128-The History of American Chinese Cuisine

After a record-breaking pause in the action Laszlo is back with one last episode to finish of 2013. This time we look at the interesting and amusing history of Chinese cuisine in America, an oft-requested topic here at the China History Podcast. This is a history that goes hand-in-hand with the earliest Chinese immigration to the US. If you’re interested to learn more on the subject check out Andrew Coe and Jennifer 8 Lee’s books:

Chop Suey: A Cultural History of Chinese Food in the United States by Andrew Coe

The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food by Jennifer 8. Lee

  • I still don’t see a download button for this podcast. I love your podcasts by the way! I got a BA in History from UCSB in 2009 and recently drove across America while listening to your podcast.

    • Hi Roger: I had my man fix it for me and it’s there. It’s so big, you missed it. I didn’t see it at first either. Look for the words DOWNLOAD EPISODE” that are written in giant font just above the photo of the chop suey…..From now on every episode will have a download button. Let me know if any problems.

  • Mr. Montgomery, no need to apologize for the US-related podcasts. They are interesting like all your podcasts.
It’s interesting to find out how China and its culture interacted with the rest of the world.
I enjoyed the Chinese in Mexico episode too.
I’m now reading the Andrew Coe and Jennifer 8 Lee books. They are better than I expected.

Any chance of a China-Korea relations podcast?

    Happy New Year!

  • Maybe some might not find this particular podcast fitting. But I really enjoyed it. I certainly enjoy Chinese history. But don’t mind when you go off on a tangent onto some of the more cultural aspects. Or in this case a Chinese-American tangent. Still catching up on your older podcast episodes and looking forward to what you have in store for us in 2014.
